Red Roses: A Solution-First Money Mindset

In both business and life, challenges are a guarantee. We face budgets that don’t stretch as far as we’d like, shifting market dynamics, or sudden operational roadblocks. So when these obstacles appear, it is incredibly easy to treat them as a brick wall, a definitive, immovable barrier that signals the end of the road.

But what if we shifted our perspective?
What if, instead of staring at the wall, we started looking for the space past it?

To understand the power of a solution-focused mindset, we don’t have to look any further than the rugby pitch. Specifically, the incredible athleticism and tactical brilliance of the England Women’s Rugby team, the Red Roses.

Playing Through the Phases

If you have ever watched the Red Roses dominate on the world stage, you know they rarely score a try through sheer luck or open, empty fields. More often than not, they are met with a fierce, organised, and bruising defensive line. To the untrained eye, that wall of defenders looks completely impenetrable.

If the team viewed that defensive line as a permanent barrier, the game would be over before it started! Instead, they view it as a series of phases.

When the Red Roses make contact, they don’t see a dead end. They retain the ball, recycle it quickly, and set up the next phase. They might carry the ball straight into contact three, four, or five times, gaining just an inch or two at a time.

To an outsider, it might look like they are running straight into a wall.
But in reality, they are testing the defence, tiring out the opposition, and waiting for the exact moment a gap begins to form.
They aren’t focused on the tackle they just took. They are entirely focused on the next pass, the next support line, and ultimately, the try line beyond the noise.

Cracking the Defence in Business

When a business challenge arises, a problem-focused mindset acts like a player who gets tackled and simply holds onto the ball, conceding a penalty because they didn’t look for the offload. It causes us to stall, overanalyse the barrier, and lose our forward momentum.

A solution-focused mindset treats business challenges exactly like a rugby phase play:

  • Expect the contact
Don’t be shocked when a roadblock appears. Accept that a defensive line is part of the game.
  • Secure the ball
When a problem hits, stabilise. Assess what resources, skills, and data you have right now to keep possession of the situation.
  • Reset and go again
If the first approach didn’t break through, recycle the plan. Shift the point of attack, try a different angle, pull in a teammate for support, and keep moving forward, even if progress is measured in inches.
  • Look for the gap
If you keep pushing through the phases with discipline and a positive attitude, the wall will eventually tire or shift, and a gap will appear.

Seeing Past the Wall

The Red Roses don’t win matches by wishing the defence wasn’t there. They win because their belief in their system, their teamwork, and their ultimate goal is stronger than any obstacle in front of them. They play with the absolute certainty that if they keep executing their phases, they will cross the whitewash.

The next time your business or personal life faces a daunting challenge, take a page out of the Red Roses’ playbook. Don’t let the defensive line dictate your limits. Keep your eyes firmly fixed on the space behind the problem, trust your team, push through the current phase, and keep driving forward until you score.
